Spring Discount on Expeditionary Whale-Watching Safari to West Greenland
Bristol, 4 September 2019: Travellers who book a place on the West Greenland Safari expedition cruise in May 2020 with Arctic specialist tour operator, Swoop, will benefit from a special 20% Spring Discount.
The 11-day voyage, which begins and ends in Nuuk, the capital of Greenland, features whale-watching, hiking, glorious panoramic vistas, spectacular ice fjords, calving glaciers, zodiac cruising, wildlife encounters, Inuit culture, colonial and Viking history. Plus, there are plenty of opportunities for optional adventures such as kayaking excursions and helicopter flights over the icescape.
Following a day exploring the world’s most northern capital, with its contrasting modern buildings and traditional, brightly coloured houses, which stand out from the stark background of rocks and snow like jewels in a crown, passengers embark the brand new expedition ship, Greg Mortimer.
First stop en route is Greenland’s second-largest town, Sisimiut, known for its old, blue church with a gate made from whale jaws, and fascinating museum where visitors can learn more about the culture, traditions and history of the island.
There are also numerous hiking trails in the area to suit differing levels of ability. Passengers with a good level of fitness may opt for the more challenging 3.5-hour, 500 metre ascent of Priest Mountain, during which they will be rewarded by stunning views, local flora and the possibility of spotting foxes, grouse, eagles and maybe even musk oxen.
One of the main highlights of the trip, however, must surely be the UNESCO World Heritage Site, Illulissat Icefjord, where mountainous icebergs and huge, actively calving glaciers simply have to be seen to be believed!
In contrast to the rest of Greenland’s icy landscape, the volcanic Qeqertarsuaq or Disko Island, situated in the middle of Disko Bay, boasts red-tinged mountains, lush green hilltops, hot springs and interesting rock figures.
The surrounding waters are a regular meeting place for bowhead and humpback whales, and provide an excellent chance for zodiac cruising and kayaking to get a closer look at these magnificent creatures!
Other places of interest visited include Uummannaq – characterised by its iconic heart-shaped mountain and archaeological site where mummified bodies dating back to 1475AD were discovered; and Upernavik, home to the world’s largest bird cliffs at Apparsuit, an open-air museum showcasing colonial and Viking history, plus thousands of islands, icebergs and impressive ice fjords.
There are two price bands for this trip, one with and one without return flights between Copenhagen and Greenland. With the 20% Spring Discount deducted, prices start from £4,560 per person excluding flights and from £5,600 per person including flights from Copenhagen. Both prices are based on twin share and include full board accommodation during the voyage, all shore activities and zodiac excursions, educational lectures and onboard polar experts.
