Renowned Artists Take Part in Interactive Onboard Art Programme in Canadian Arctic

London, 3 July 2019 – Each year, One Ocean Expeditions’ (OOE) ‘Art in the Arctic’ programme welcomes special guests onboard with a profound connection to the polar regions, combined with a highly acclaimed body of artistic work. This year, the polar expedition cruise specialist is excited to partner with a number of high-profile Canadian artists and leaders in the art community onboard their flagship vessel, RCGS Resolute.

Embarking on two voyages in the Canadian Arctic from 30 July  to 21 August 2019 is celebrated watercolour artist and Royal Canadian Geographical Society Fellow, David McEown, returning for his eighth year with OOE. An expert in the medium of watercolour for the past 30 years, David uses art to express his wonder of the natural world. A sought-after and natural instructor he readily engages with guests and conducts a variety of workshops whilst onboard.

Joining McEown from 9 August 2019 to explore stunning fissures and fjords on OOE’s Baffin Island and Greenland Explorer voyage will be artist and filmmaker Cory Trépanier. One of Canada’s Top100 Living Explorers, Cory’s expeditions to some of the most remote corners of Canada’s North have led him to internationally tour his INTO THE ARCTIC exhibition, which features footage and artwork created onboard with OOE. Trepanier will be sharing compelling stories as well as contributing to the onboard programming for art enthusiasts and amateur painters.

“Exploring and painting the Canadian Arctic for over a decade has been challenging and inspiring, bringing me face-to-face with some of our planet’s greatest natural wonders,” says Trépanier. “On this journey, I’m eager to experience new landscapes I’ve never painted before and feel humbled once again by the vastness of the Arctic as I try to convey its beauty on canvas. I’m excited to see the awe of the guests as they encounter the North and are moved by a land that is undergoing great change.”

Sailing from Iqaluit on 30 July 2019 will be the inaugural South Baffin Explorer: Art, Culture and Wildlife voyage. This ten-night expedition will focus on the art and cultural significance of the South Baffin region, allowing time to visit Kinngait (Cape Dorset), known as the ‘Capital of Inuit Art’. Travelling alongside passengers, special guests Jennifer Withrow and Dr. Nancy Campbell from the McMichael Canadian Art Collection, bring extensive knowledge on Inuit art, as well as providing guests with exclusive pre-launch access to Iningat Ilagiit, a digital Inuit art collection. Created in partnership with the West Baffin Eskimo Co-operative and with funding from the Virtual Museum of Canada, Iningat Ilagiit, meaning ‘a place for family’, is envisioned as a space for Inuit and Northern communities to connect with their own art and contribute to the important work of sharing Kinngait history and culture, and for Inuit art lovers to appreciate the incredible history of artistic output of Kinngait.

Also sailing on this voyage will be a newly appointed Arctic Artist-in-Residence for Friends of Scott Polar Research Institute’s (FoSPRI), Lesley Burr. Chosen from a host of applicants who applied for an annual residency sponsored by OOE onboard RCGS Resolute, Lesley successfully gained her place following a proposal to chronicle imagery of the Arctic, responding directly to what is seen, heard and found, using sketchbooks, studies and photographs to record experiences and observations first-hand.
