Polar Hero’s final journey to the place he loved best of all

Nearly two years after Lt Col Henry Worsley died traversing Antarctica, his ashes will be taken to Grytviken, South Georgia, gateway to Antarctica, to be buried with his hero Sir Ernest Shackleton.  The 18-night voyage onboard the 96 passenger ice-strengthened vessel, One Ocean Navigator/Akademik Ioffe, will leave from Ushuaia, on the southern tip of Argentina, on the 30 November 2017 and will sail to South Georgia, via the Falkland Islands, before heading south to Antarctica.

In 2014, the 55-year old SAS officer was the historian on the Ice Tracks expedition honouring Sir Ernest Shackleton’s centenary.  This was the last time Henry Worsley visited Grytviken so loved by whalers, sailors and polar explorers. Yet it was not his first visit; at the age of 22 he unfurled his sleeping bag and slept next to the grave of Shackleton.  An experience that would daunt many, but Worsley loved the remoteness of the graveyard that lies someway from the now deserted whaling station.

Joanna Worsley, Henry’s grief stricken wife, and their children, Alicia and Max, embraced the decision for his ashes to make their final journey to South Georgia.  “I want to see him in this place that he so loved. I want to say my final goodbye to him there,” said Joanna Worsley, who has put her faith in Ice Tracks Expeditions to take family, friends and admirers on a journey that befits a man who strode in the steps of Shackleton, Scott and Amundsen.
