Expedition Cruise Specialist to Branch Out Into Chile in 2019

Expedition Cruise Specialist to Branch Out Into Chile in 2019

London, 9 January 2018: Following the announcement that One Ocean Expeditions (OOE) will be celebrating its 10th anniversary year with the addition of RCGS Resolute to its fleet in November 2018, the expedition cruise specialist has also revealed that it will be expanding its cruise programme in 2019 to include several itineraries in to South America.

The first voyage of this new programme, which will also be the inaugural non-polar expedition on board RCGS Resolute, will venture into the maze of inlets and islands of the dramatic Chilean Fjords in March 2019, immediately after the last cruise of the Antarctic season.  The timing of this trip means that guests can experience the White Continent AND South America by combining OOE’s Antarctic Peninsula Adventure (21-31 March 2019) and the new Chilean Fjords Expedition (31 March – 13 April 2019) in an amazing 23-night voyage!

The 13-night Chilean adventure provides access to a region of incredible beauty, much of which is almost impossible to access by land.  Travelling north from Ushuaia in Argentina to Valparaiso in Chile along an extraordinary coastline and one of the earth’s last great wilderness regions, it takes in the vast Patagonian ice sheet that represents the third largest ice mass on the planet.

Highlights of the cruise begin in the UNESCO designated biosphere of Alberto De Agostino National Park with the impressive tidewater Marinelli Glacier.  Here passengers are very likely to encounter a variety of resident wildlife such as South American sea lions, Magellanic penguins, whales and the iconic Andean condor.

Hikes led by experienced local guides through ancient forests, and the spectacular Torres del Paine National Park, are also high spots of the voyage, as excursions take in some of the most stunning mountain scenery in the world and the magnificent rugged coastline, ancient forested mountains, snow-capped peaks, waterfalls and glaciers continue mile after mile.

Exciting navigation follows as the ship heads on towards Brüggen, the largest glacier in the southern hemisphere outside of Antarctica, towering almost 70 metres above the water – a colossal sight, particularly when viewed from the low vantage point of a zodiac!

Upon entering the Pacific Ocean the expedition explores the colourful houses on stilts or ‘palafitos’ of Castro on Chiloé Island, before heading to the remote Mocha Island, an important cultural site, historically inhabited by the indigenous Mapuche tribe and today where sea lions, whales and the rare pink-footed shearwater can be spotted.

Finally, the journey comes to a close as the ship docks in the deep-water port of Valparaiso, with its bohemian atmosphere, historic funicular railway and gateway to the celebrated Casablanca wine region.

The superior capability of RCGS Resolute and the excellent level of comfort provided means that passengers travelling on this enviable ship are not only able to experience the highest standards of on board programming and expedition style cruising that OOE is best known for, they do so whilst enjoying exceedingly comfortable cabins and a vessel purpose-built for passenger travel.

Prices for the Chilean Fjords 13-night expedition cruise start at US$5695 per person sharing a triple cabin and US$6995pp sharing a twin cabin, both with private bathrooms.
