Fat Biking In West Greenland Through Pristine Arctic Landscapes

Fat Biking In West Greenland Through Pristine Arctic Landscapes

Bristol, 30 September 2019:  Keen cyclists looking for ultimate bragging rights can really step up a gear on Swoop-Arctic’s six-day fat biking adventure across West Greenland in the Arctic Circle.  Relatively few people have taken on the 160km challenge from the icecap of Kangerlussuaq to Sisimiut on the coast.

Comprising five full days traversing Greenland’s wilderness, the expedition takes in rugged tundra and pristine, snow-covered landscapes, as well as the stunning 60-metre high wall of Russell Glacier, which is located in a designated UNESCO World Heritage Site.  The perfect location in which to leave only tyre tracks and to take only photos.

Energetic cyclists will complete the Arctic Circle Trail during the trip, whilst those who opt to pedal fewer miles can get a lift onboard the accompanying support vehicle.

Accommodation along the route is in remote cabins or thermo tents.  If the cabins – which cannot be pre-booked – are already occupied by local dog sled mushers, then the group will sleep under canvas.

Either way, the hope is that they will be rewarded with the breath-taking sight of the Aurora Borealis or Northern Lights.

Meals during the trip are warm and hearty, with plenty of snacks and hot drinks also provided during strategic stops along the trail.

Finally, participants may enjoy the benefits of the Arctic Spa in Sisimiut, letting the heat of the sauna raise their body temperature, before – as tradition dictates – immersing themselves in the snow to close their pores and release muscle tension!  A wilderness bath then provides cyclists with the opportunity to indulge themselves and relax as blood flow and heart rate are stabilised, and endorphins or well-being hormones released.

Prices start from £3,042 per person, based on six night’s accommodation in remote cabins or thermo tents between February and April 2020, full board throughout the itinerary, expedition guides, support transport and return airport transfers.  If you don’t have a fat bike or prefer not to take your own then fat bike and helmet hire is approximately £250.  Return flights to Greenland are not included.  Optional excursions such as guided dog sledding and snowmobile tours can be arranged.
